A computer control system for accelerator is a must for any modern accelerator laboratory. In the past many such systems were based on home made or other academic based scientific institutes both for hardware and software origin. This was due to the large gap between commercial industrial based systems and the requirements for accelerator labs. However the large demand from automatic industrial control systems has canceled this gap. In this talk three main tracks of computer control systems will be discussed. 1. New accelerators where all the options are open. 2. Upgrading an old computer control system where expertise and hardware are already available. 3. Installing a system for the first time. The Weizmann Institute computer control system will be presented as an example. The cases of the Pelletron accelerator system will be discussed in details. Also the Van de Graff system and the molecular laboratory systems will be shown. All are using LabVIEW as the main control program and many types of hardware. |
