Recent progress in the understanding of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei will be presented. It first concerns properties of multifragmentation: partitions and freeze-out. Then, the observation of a generic signal of first order phase transition for finite systems will be shown for hot nuclei associated with the first measurement of the latent heat of the transition.
